A business blog can be a very useful tool for both small businesses and large companies. The following are some of the things you need to consider before launching a business blog.

1. Purpose

What is your main purpose for starting a business blog? Do you want to use it for product development, market research, customer service, branding or marketing? Choosing a specific purpose for your blog will help you get focused and avoid having multiple objectives. A blog which is focused has a higher chance of success than one that isn’t.

2. Target audience

You need to decide who exactly you trying to reach with your business blog. Once you figure out who your target audience is, you will then be able to build a blog with content which is most suitable for them. However, if you have several target groups you want to reach, it would be advisable to create different blogs to meet each particular need.

3. Blogging software

When it comes to blogging software, there are several options to choose from. You need to decide based on what you would like to do with it and what level of customization you desire. It would be advisable to select software which would suit your current technical and business needs, and which will grow with your business. Some of the blogging software available include Blogger, WordPress or TypePad.

4. Hosting

You can either host your blog on your website or on a separate domain. If the blog complements the content on your site, it would be advisable to integrate it. However, if you wish to establish a separate identity or look at your industry from a different perspective, you should go for a separate domain name.

5. Name of the blog

The business blog should be a reflection of your brand or company. Therefore, you need to ensure that it contains your primary keywords. Make sure the business blog name is simple and easy to remember. In addition, it needs to be a name which will remain relevant in the long term as your business grows.

6. Look and feel

If you choose to integrate your blog with your site, make sure both have same look and feel. However, if the blog is on a different domain, you need to design it in the most appropriate way. If you decide to use any free template provided by blogging software, make sure you customize it so as to differentiate your site.

7. Who to blog and frequency

If you are operating as an individual or a small business, it is likely that you will be the one blogging. For large companies, it would be advisable to choose someone who is passionate and informed about the subject of the blog. When it comes to frequency, you could consider posting at least twice a week to keep your audience updated.
