Some times back I had written on Is MBA necessary and why should one do an MBA. And the conclusion from these two post’s was that MBA is necessary but one should do it only from a good college which has good faculty, placement records, etc. Now the criteria of good college would be different for you and different for me.
More over many young professionals are refraining from doing an MBA at a very young age i.e. directly after graduation, they rather prefer doing an executive MBA or a part time MBA after gaining a good work experience. Students with prior work experience have an edge in B-school admissions. An improved “class-room experience” and perceived ease of placements, are primary reasons behind the trend.
Official sources in Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Kolkata, Lucknow and Rohtak and, XLRI Jamshedpur confirm that the share of such students has increased to 60-70 per cent of the batch size. The ratio was as low as 30-40 per cent till about two-to-three years ago.
According to Professor Amit Dhiman, Chairperson, Placement, IIM-Calcutta, the 2010 batch, which was just placed, had 34 per cent freshers and 66 per cent students with work experience. “There has been a rise in the number of students joining IIM-C with prior experience. While a majority of these students have an average experience of 10 months-to-two years, close to 15 per cent of them had work-experience of more than 36 months,” he said. [source]
I recently visited an education councilor and he advised me not to do an MBA at this age, according to him I should gain a good work experience and try for an MBA at a later stage. He advised that one should have at-least a 3 years of work experience before opting for an MBA. I asked him how will this impact? He said – A person with a good amount of work experience is always preferred by B-Schools, more over he will have the skills required which he might have gained during the period when he was working and last but not the least the person with prior work experience would get a good placement compared to the people who don’t have prior work experience.
Over to you! What do you think about this?
